Cura Day of Appreciation

Faculty and staff are invited to share stories of appreciation and gratitude for their colleagues on the Cura Day of Appreciation. Each member of the SLU community shares their gifts and talents with the world everyday. These gifts and talents are shared through actions that go above and beyond what is expected. On the Cura Day of Appreciation, faculty and staff will share meaningful positive stories about the impact their colleagues have had.

Beginning at 7am and throughout the morning on December 14, faculty and staff are encouraged to stop by the Allied Health Building Multipurpose Room (south campus) to receive a SLU Sparks notepad and write at least 2 notes to their colleagues. From 7:30 to 11:30 a.m., SLU Sparks notepads and pens will also be distributed at the Wool Center Lobby (north campus).

Electronic SLU Sparks can also be sent by clicking here.

At 12:30pm on December 14, faculty and staff can return to the Allied Health Building Multipurpose Room for a program, at which individuals will have the opportunity to share stories of appreciation for their colleagues. The program will include brief opening remarks and then the floor will be open for faculty and staff to recognize each other by sharing their notes of gratitude with those in attendance. Submit an electronic SLU Spark beforehand and bring a copy of it to the program, or bring the notes written earlier in the day to share. Even if you do not have a story to share, come hear about the outstanding contributions of the members of the SLU community! Light beverages and cookies will be provided at the program at 12:30pm.

The best way to spread workplace cheer is sharing a special note with a peer!
Share what makes your colleagues special on the Cura Day of Appreciation!

Rosemary Nagy Received a SLU Spark!

Congratulations to Rosemary Nagy, Pediatrics, who received a SLU Spark! Rosemary was recognized by Maureen Bresnahan, Office of Research Integrity, for strengthening our community.

"Honestly, during Rosemary's tenure at the University, her contributions represent every single SLU Spark Category. She constantly pursues excellence, seeks truth, shows compassion, serves others, strengthens our community, and drives change an innovation. However, this particular Spark is for her effort to strengthen our community (and, really, serve others). A junior investigator new to SLU was looking for guidance (and some mentorship) for a research study. Without any hesitation, Rosemary not only offered to share some of the template material she's created for other studies, but also offered to help with any additional questions he might have - even though this particular investigator was not in her department. Not only is Rosemary helping out a new researcher, she is helping to strengthen the research community as a whole."

Her drive (and especially her attention to detail) has helped not only her department, but other departments with which she interacts."

TRiO-SSS Supports The Humane Society of Missouri

TRiO-SSS Shelter Buddies Service Team (l-r):  Chau Truong, Jennifer Lu, Leana Wu, Yamily Tito, Maria Garcia and Makailya Pickrell
On Saturday, September 24, six SLU TRiO-Student Support Services students and one staff member participated in the Shelter Buddies Reading Program, sponsored by the Humane Society of Missouri. The service team received classroom training on how to read to shelter dogs in order to help comfort and socialize them in preparation for adoption. They were then able to apply that knowledge by reading to actual dogs at the shelter. As a result of having completed this training, each member of the service team will be able to return to the Humane Society and participate in the Shelter Buddies Reading Program on their own time.

The service team, led by TRiO-SSS Academic Counselor, Jamie D. Motley, also consisted of Maria Garcia, Jennifer Lu, Makailya Pickrell, Yamily Tito, Chau Truong and Leana Wu.

This was part of an ongoing initiative within TRiO-SSS to provide service learning experiences for students in the program. Other organizations that program participants have provided service to include Almost Home, Earth Day Network , Greenway Network, Let's Start and the Sierra Club. TRiO-SSS is a federally funded program designed to provide a variety of support services to first-generation college students, as well as students who are from modest-income households or have disabilities. The program, led by Lindsay Gonterman, is part of Student Educational Services and housed in O'Brien Hall.

Verónica Azcue Castillón, Tania de la Fuente, Chris Ealham, Javier Gamo Aranda, Kevin Ingram, Renzo Llorente, Fabiola Martínez, Melanie Mitchell, Mónica Pérez-Bedmar, Mary Prendergast, Francisco Prieto, Olga Ramírez Calle, Simona Rentea, Alesia Slocum, Laura Tedesco, and Kirk Tennant Received SLU Sparks!

The SLU-Madrid Senators, Verónica Azcue Castillón, Tania de la Fuente, Chris  Ealham, Javier Gamo Aranda, Kevin Ingram, Renzo Llorente, Fabiola Martínez, Melanie  Mitchell, Mónica Pérez-Bedmar, Mary Prendergast, Francisco Prieto, Olga Ramírez Calle,  Simona Rentea, Alesia Slocum, Laura Tedesco, and Kirk Tennant, were recognized by Anne Dewey, SLU-Madrid for strengthening our community.

"Although SLU Sparks are designed for individuals, sometimes group interaction is fundamental in creating the community essential to building institutions. This SLU Spark is for SLU Madrid’s first Senators: Verónica Azcue Castillón, Tania de la Fuente, Chris Ealham, Javier Gamo Aranda, Kevin Ingram, Renzo Llorente, Fabiola Martínez, Melanie Mitchell, Mónica Pérez-Bedmar, Mary Prendergast, Francisco Prieto, Olga Ramírez Calle, Simona Rentea, Alesia Slocum, Laura Tedesco, and Kirk Tennant.
It is not easy to establish shared governance or the legitimacy and role of a new institution. You have undertaken this task with little experience and few guideposts, in common ground mined with anger, frustration, and old grievances. You have had the courage to believe in change and to work for it. While it has been difficult, stressful, and often discouraging to determine how best to advocate for faculty concerns; to trip mines, face the explosions, and labor for reconciliation; to discover that we disagree despite our shared goal of enabling faculty voice; each of you has acted with great integrity—in arguing for what you thought best, listening to others, and respecting the Senate as an institution for decision-making. Take pride not only in the foundation of shared governance you have laid but in what may be the Senate’s most valuable and least visible accomplishment: its commitment to keep talking through our differences, to braving the tension this creates, and to persevering in constructive debate. Every voice has been essential, and the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

Beyond sincere thanks to all of you for these achievements, special thanks to part-time faculty, who served generously without compensation, and to each of you for your individual contributions, among these:
  • Verónica, for your unwavering advocacy for high professional standards and defense of fair treatment of part-time faculty
  • Tania, for your calm attentive presence at meetings and your support for research
  • Chris, for your perceptive insights, outside-the- box thinking, wealth of experience at different educational institutions, and wit
  • Javier, for always answering emails and for your willingness to serve despite many commitments
  • Kevin, for your energy, healthy outrage, growth into leadership, and drive to keep us moving forward (“Keep it simple”)
  • Renzo, for your invaluable role as gadfly for truth and justice, high ethical expectations, knowledge of higher education policy, and archival memory
  • Fabiola, for your careful thinking and dedication to collaborative discussion when developing policy, and your thoughtful support
  • Melanie, for your high ethical standards and power to inspire them in others, conscientious problem-solving, generosity, patience, and eloquence
  • Mónica, for your intelligence and plain-spoken good sense during the short time you were senator
  • Mary, for your amazing organizational efficiency, diligence in fulfilling responsibilities, and ingrained sense of fairness
  • Francisco, for your willingness to learn what you needed to do your job well, educating yourself to assume the responsibility of shared governance
  • Olga, for earnestly giving your best in thoughtful engagement of each issue and for some impressive logical analysis
  • Simona, for your thorough critical conceptualization of your work and adherence to high standards in completing all tasks
  • Alesia, for your gifts (skills) of listening and constructive synthesis, and for bringing your deep understanding of the workplace to bear on challenges
  • Laura, for your carefully-thought and -chosen words, and for keeping the importance of the Senate’s efficient, harmonious functioning in mind
  • Kirk, for your long-term support for shared governance and for authoring the first ranks proposal (2009), an initiative now coming to fruition
You have opened a path through difficult terrain, and, thanks to you, the journey will be easier for those who come after. Congratulations on a job well done!"

Congratulations to Zack Thatcher, Psychology, who received a SLU Spark! Zack was recognized by Beth Glauber, Psychology, for serving others.

"Zack was hired as the administrative secretary for Neuroscience in 2015 after having worked in ESL on campus. Since the Neuroscience major consists of Biology and Psychology courses, he was housed in Morrissey Hall. He quickly became my "right hand man" in completing all tasks in the department with the departure of our administrative secretary. Despite the growing demands of his own Neuroscience program, Zack has managed to take on many tasks, which includes website updates, reimbursements, event management, copy bills, and supplies needed in the Dept of Psychology. He is always there to lend a hand and is a very pleasant person with whom to work. I am grateful for his assistance and want him to know how important he is to many people!"

SLU Stars is a peer-to-peer recognition award that recognizes colleagues who demonstrate professionalism and behavior congruent with the University's Ignatian ideals, and whose accomplishments further the mission of Saint Louis University. SLU Stars are those unheralded faculty and staff members who regularly go above and beyond to touch the lives of the colleagues, students, clients, and patients with whom they interact on a daily basis. Their commitment to the mission is not a singular event, but a continuous story of the mission in action. As an initiative within the Cura program, SLU Stars support a culture of understanding, respect, and appreciation for everyone, and they inspire a collaborative and collegial working, learning, and social environment.

SLU Stars are nominated by their peers to receive the award. Each nomination cycle, the SLU Stars Committee reviews nominations and selects those which best speak to the criteria of the award. The SLU Stars Committee includes:
  • Alexis Bruce-Staudt, College for Public Health & Social Justice
  • Judi Buncher, Mission & Identity
  • Peter Garvin, Department of Public Safety
  • Cathy Happa, Internal Medicine
  • Katie Hoff (Chair), Learning & Development
  • Maddie O’Connell, Learning & Development
  • Rita Stites, Pediatrics
  • Cathy Zimmer, College of Arts & Sciences

This year, Chris Collins, S.J., Assistant to the President for Mission & Identity, and Mickey Luna, Vice President for Human Resources, offered remarks.

Luna expressed, “During each award cycle, the committee receives numerous nominations, which in itself is a tribute to the regard SLU colleagues have for one another. Not only do these tributes tell the story of our mission one SLU Star at a time, but they also reflect how ardently the nominators admire and support their colleagues.” Maddie O’Connell, SLU Stars Committee member, added, “it is an honor to be nominated, and an even greater honor to be chosen as a SLU Star.”

Collins remarked that it is wonderful to learn about the unique contributions of each SLU Star, which demonstrate the wide variety of activities and departments of Saint Louis University. “The SLU Stars event is a time to build community, with many individuals you typically would not interact with.”

The following is a summarized version of the nominations of each SLU Star:

Debra Blanquart, senior academic advisor in the School for Professional Studies. Deb exemplifies what it means to live by the Ignatian ideals in her daily interactions. There have been several instances when Deb handled a situation involving a deeply upset student and managed to turn it from a negative to positive through her compassionate communication and respect for them as an individual. With her can-do attitude and optimism, she continues to contribute positively towards maintaining the morale of all her colleagues. Thank you, Deb, for exemplifying how to live the Ignatian values for your students and colleagues.

Kari Elbe, contract coordinator for the School of Nursing. In Kari’s role, she interacts daily with the School of Nursing’s clinical partners and has built strong relationships with them. In addition to building strong relationships with key partners, she also takes the time to know her School of Nursing colleagues on a personal level and will stop what she is going to listen to a coworker in need of some words of encouragement, which sometimes take the form of song lyrics. Faculty and staff also come to Kari for her excellent knowledge of technology and how to utilize it for effective record keeping; she has a gift for taking large amounts of data and organizing it in a meaningful format. Thank you, Kari, for building relationships and sharing your skills with outside partners of the University and your colleagues.

Peter Garvin, officer for the Department of Public Safety. Pete brightens up a room, and more often SLU’s campus, while treating everyone with kindness. Pete is a person that is professional at all times; mindful of his position; lives the SLU mission, embraces Cura and what it stands for, and does not just hope for a change but actively takes part in fostering positive change to make SLU a better place for all of us in the years to come. He will stand up and identify an injustice when all around him will choose to look down or look away. Thank you, Pete, for your optimism and kindness towards all members of the community.

Jay Haugen, University Registrar. Over the past several years, drastic systematic changes were implemented across the university, in large part, due to the leadership and dedication of Jay and his team. Jay’s respectful and kind approach to addressing various concerns has continued to allow him to brainstorm with the users. He offers proposed solutions to problems or needs and reflects on the issue at a later date to ensure the process is as seamless as possible. Thank you, Jay, for your commitment to collaboration and continuous improvement at SLU.

Susan Hoffstetter, associate professor for Urological Gynecology (Ob-GYN). Susan is committed to St. Louis University’s philosophy as evidenced by the exceptional care she provides to her patients and her steadfast dedication to the mission. Thank you, Susan, for providing exceptional care to your patients through your unrelenting pursuit of women’s health.

He works to ensure the transportation for the Micah program is coordinated as easily and efficiently as possible, always in a professional and positive manner. Thank you, Patrick, for your dedication to serving our Micah students and the local St. Louis community.

Lisa Israel, director of retention and academic success for the Student Success Center. Lisa has not only been an exceptional leader and contributor to the Division of Student Development, but additionally an active member in service to the larger SLU community. She is a collaborative leader throughout campus - maximizing her relationships to advance the work to support student success. Lisa consistently fosters a spirit of excellence in her own work, and in her expectations and accountability of the staff who report to her. Thank you, Lisa, for your leadership to support the success of your colleagues and SLU’s students.

Karen Janiak, assistant director of student accounts for Student Financial Services. Karen has been instrumental in developing the Banner system to charge student accounts. The rules that go into charging tuition are very complex, and she has mastered how to input the information so it makes it look like a simple puzzle she’s worked on. Karen always has an open ear and is easily approachable; whether it be a tense phone call or even a personal matter she always makes you feel comfortable going to her about it. Thank you, Karen, for your dedication to your work, colleagues, and the community.

Jennifer Popiel, associate professor of History. The History Department’s go-to person on any question related to SLU’s mission, Jennifer has led workshops on Ignatian pedagogy, taken part in discussions of the Jesuit core and participated in week-long seminars on SLU’s mission. Jennifer is a person of utter integrity, one willing to speak her mind for the sake of the higher good, even risking unpopularity if necessary. She has been responsible for helping instill a sense of community not only in the History Department but at the University, all the result of her commitment to Jesuit mission. Thank you, Jennifer, for living and demonstrating SLU’s mission and values to your students and colleagues.

Joanne Salas, senior biostatistician in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Joanne always goes above and beyond expectations by learning new biostatistical methods to support her team’s research. She does not simply generate results, but she ensures researchers understand the logic of her decisions and helps others express the technical aspects of advanced data analysis in their scholarly presentations and papers. Joanne’s commitment to the Ignatian ideals of learning, serving, generosity, respect and concern for others has greatly increased morale and a sense of common purpose in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Thank you, Joanne, for sharing your wealth of expertise and knowledge with SLU students and your colleagues.

"One morning, I was very upset and crying in the bathroom in regards to something my teenager had called me about and a decision he made and was asking me to make. The whole morning I was on and off the phone with the school counselor and my son. I was so stressed and upset. A co-worker saw me in the bathroom and asked if I was ok. I said that I was and left it at that. That co-worker got Carolyn because she knew I was upset. Carolyn rushed down to the bathroom without a thought, came and sat by me, hugged me and asked me what was going on. She stayed as long as I needed her to while consoling me, listening, caring and offering words of advice. This co-worker and friend that I speak about is just getting over breast cancer, still taking radiation treatments. She's been through a lot herself with her health yet she rushed to my side, only thinking of me and my emotional health. She's a very good person and I'm glad that she's in my life."

Juggling the registration, costuming, communication, coordination and transportation of almost 100 SLU participants may seem super human but Regina handled this daunting task with efficiency and grace.
